Devotion:

The princess shall indeed grow in grace and beauty, beloved by all who know her. -Maleficent

Princess Aurora is a lovely example of a girl who’s commendable. Gentle, loving, noble and kind. Her qualities were worthy of praise, and she was praised—especially by Prince Phillip. (Not to mention the forest animals.) She truly was beloved by all who knew her. Why? Because she grew in grace and beauty. Let’s take a look at that and see how it relates to our Proverbs 31 woman!

Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” -Proverbs 31:28-29

The way the Proverbs 31 woman chose to live her life is definitely commendable! And this didn’t go unnoticed by her husband and children—they called her blessed and praised her. Just like Aurora, I imagine the Proverbs 31 woman strived to daily grow in grace and beauty, too.

But Aurora wasn’t perfect. She fell for the enemy’s trap. And believe it not—the Proverbs 31 woman wasn’t perfect, either! How do I know that? Because we ALL sin and fall short of the glory of God. We all trip up and make mistakes. That’s why we need Jesus. But—like the Proverbs 31 woman—there are choices we can make and steps we can take each day to become more like the woman God created us to be.

So, as a woman of God, what would it look like for us to grow in grace and beauty?

1. Grow in God’s grace.

Grace. What a wonderful word. Grace is God’s free, undeserved kindness and favor toward us. We can come close to Him without worrying about being “perfect” or “good enough.” Christ already made us right with God by dying on the cross for us. (If we accept His free gift of salvation.) There’s nothing we can do to earn it. But it doesn’t stop there. We’re already saved, but our love for Him should compel us to obey Him and do good works! To live for Him. To grow in His grace.

For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was His plan from before the beginning of time—to show us His grace through Christ Jesus. -2 Timothy 1:9

2. Grow in true beauty.

The Bible talks a lot about true beauty. It says that people look at the outward appearance—but God looks at the heart. And it also teaches us that the beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit is precious in God’s sight. “Beauty is found within” isn’t just a nice saying—it’s Biblical. And it’s such a wonderful truth!

So what does your heart look like? Is it growing more beautiful every day, or is it being filled with not-so-beautiful things? To grow in true beauty, we need to diligently go to the garden of our hearts and tend to it every day. We need to water it with the truth of God’s Word and pull out the weeds through prayer. Most importantly, we need to let our hearts just bask in the sunshine of God’s presence and love.

You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God. -1 Peter 3:4

Now, not everyone will commend us. We may have enemies like Maleficent. (And our greatest enemy—Satan—is referred to as a dragon in Revelation.)

Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ. -Galatians 1:10

But that’s the best part. People’s praise shouldn’t be our goal. When we grow in God’s grace and beauty, there’s a good chance people will commend us. But even if they don’t, we know who we’re really aiming to please—our Heavenly Father, God—and His commendation is all that truly matters!

The master was full of praise. “Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!” -Matthew 25:21

Questions:

  1. What did you learn from the Scripture passages?
  2. What Bible verse really stood out to you?
  3. What does it look like to be a girl or a woman who’s commendable?
  4. Write down a list of ways you can grow in God’s grace and beauty this week.
  5. Think of a woman in your life who’s commendable and send her a message of praise!
